Cinnamon Spiced Old Fashioned?

A few years ago we posted an article on how to make Spiced Fig Old-Fashioned cocktails. Everyone we shared the cocktail with loved it. While extremely delicious, some readers asked if there was a similar cocktail they could make, but with a simpler ingredient list.

We kept that idea in the back of our mind, and it popped to the fore when we heard about Standard Proof‘s new award-winning Cinnamon Spiced Rye. Seemed like a perfect fit…and we were right.

Standard Proof Cinnamon Spiced Rye

Standard Proof’s Cinnamon Spiced is premium rye whiskey aged in new American oak barrels, infused with real Ceylon cinnamon, and aged 2 years to create a wonderful balance of whiskey, oak, and cinnamon.

The rye is cinnamon-infused for 16 weeks, then filtered through Standard Proof’s proprietary process, bottled into 750 ml (just over 26 ounces) bottles, resulting in rested, 80 proof deliciousness of a 51% rye, 44% corn, and 5% malted barley mash bill.

The basic Old Fashioned cocktail is pretty simple: some whiskey, bitters, sugar, ice, and a peel of orange. Getting the balance right, though, is the key to a delicious Old Fashioned: too sweet and you can’t taste the whiskey; not enough sugar and the taste won’t hold together. It is a surprisingly delicate balance to lock in, but you will know it when you get it.

It took us a few tries to finally get the ratio dialed in for a quick Spiced Old Fashioned (meaning: we didn’t have to sous vide it and then let it sit for a few weeks)—just in time for Presidents Day Weekend, and any weekend thereafter.

The tricky part of the Old Fashioneds that we were pouring was made much easier with the deliciously spiced Standard Proof Cinnamon Spiced rye. What we were toying with was the right amount of simple syrup and Demon Seed to add to the rye.

We found that a 1.5/1/0.5 ratio of Cinnamon Spiced Rye/Simple Syrup/Demon Seed brought out all the flavors. Readers are encouraged to adjust and experiment. And please feel free to report your findings!!! 

Cinnamon Spiced Old Fashioned

Mix in the glass, then stir
  • 1.5 oz of Standard Proof Cinnamon Spiced Rye
  • 0.5 oz of Demon Seed Rye
  • 1 tsp of Simple Syrup
  • 3 dashes of bitters
Add
  • 1 Luxardo cherry
  • 1 slice of orange peel
  • ice cubes
