Dyson MultiFloor 2 : FirstLook

No, it's not new, just new to us

Oreck makes a really nice vacuum cleaner. The XL21 we have is light, easy to maneuver, and has been quietly doing its job since 2007. But, as with all things mechanical, a part on it finally failed. A note to Oreck got us this response : “…the Fan Housing is a store only part that is not available to ship directly to customers….”

OK, EBay for the part it is then!

Uh, is that the way it’s supposed to work?

Dyson

In the meantime, we scored an older Dyson to fill in just in case we could not get the Oreck back into service. The Dyson is the MultiStair 2. It is a few generations later than the Dyson DC01 introduced 1993, but it has the famous bagless design, as well as the patented super strong Dual Cyclone motor.

Also had a cameo in the Star Wars franchise.

One of the benefits of Dyson’s vacuum cleaners is that they don’t lose their suction as the bag starts filling, compared to the bagged cleaners. Additionally, not having to find replacement bags is both waaay more convenient and a lot more economical.

Dyson Ball MultiFloor 2:

This is the cutest vacuum cleaner we have ever had.

AND it’s really good at what it does.

Empty Canister

Steps to empty the canister is pretty straight forward:

For some reason, nothing happened when we pressed the “release lid” button. Closer inspection revealed that the tab on the lid had broken off, so there was nothing for the orange rod to push against. No big deal, we just released the lid by pulling it open. It’s a little messy, but we are pretty sure we can glue something in place of the broken tab (because that’s who we are).

Even “broken” this thing works great.

After emptying the canister, we noted that it was still kind of dirty. Since everything was designed to come apart, we did just that, and wiped down the orange part with a sponge and rinsed out the clear cylinder.

Nothing like being able to see how much dirt you’ve vacuumed up to make you think you’ve had a useful day.

It is such a pleasure to work on a machine where thoughtful engineering went into enhancing the maintenance experience.

Well done, Dyson!!!

Wash Filters

There are two filters in the Dyson MultiFloor 2:

  • The one in the canister is the pre-filter and can block particles as small as 0.3 microns in size.
  • The one in the wheel is the post-filter and is there to trap the carbon dust from the carbon-brushed motor, and any dust that managed to escape the cyclone stages and the pre-motor filter.

Canister filter.

The removal of both filters were simple, quick, and easy…best part? No tools necessary.

Wheel filter.

Being bagless is already pretty great, but washable and reusable filters??? Seriously? This is next level AWESOME!!!

So easy to clean. SO EASY.

Let Dry

Dyson recommended everything be let air dried for 24hrs before reassembly, which makes sense to us (dry dirt and wet filter are a bad combination). We left the parts out overnight to let the process do its thing. We’ll put it all back together and take it for the FirstUse spin (see what we did there?) to see how it compares to the Oreck.

Look for the post at the end of May 🙂

Yup, cleaned it up just to get it dirty again.

BTW, RainyDayReaders should appreciate that the word “suck” was not used once…Oh, damn it Frank!!!
