Green Chef : FirstLook

Meal kit for "Eating Well."

Cooking at home is fun, thrifty, and an excellent way to eat healthy.

But, like most things in life, there are a few drawbacks to it as well: we might have to go to more than one store for ingredients, buy more than what we need because of how it’s packaged, and make sure we have enough time to actually make the recipe.

What if there was a better option? What if there was a meal-kit service that delivered fresh groceries, in the amounts needed, for tested recipes within specific eating goals? How much would that be worth?

Green Chef

A few RainyDayMagazine readers have been asking us about Green Chef since we wrote up our Mosaic experience. We liked Mosaic because it came frozen and “ready-to-go,” but on our time. We were a little bit skeptical of a fresh-ingredients meal-prep service that required us to cook the dishes within seven days of it being delivered.

After hearing folks rave about Green Chef, though, we decided to give them a try.

Neatly, niftily, packaged.

We were able to choose amongst a wide variety of meal options: Keto+Paleo, Mediterranean, Fast & Fit, Vegan, Vegetarian, and Gluten-Free. We decided on the Keto+Paleo menu because we wanted to sample both meat and non-meat recipes.

It’s like a treasure chest of edible, healthy goodies!

The box of food came well packaged, still cold, and all of the meals individually bagged. The meat portions were chilled and vacuumed sealed, but not frozen.

Kind of like taking your lunch to school, but grown-up style (and you have to cook it first).

A week’s worth of meals for two consisted of four individually assembled and labeled bags and printed instructions on how to prep/cook the meals. Our Green Chef delivery consisted of:

Magical paper bags of deliciousness.

Upon closer inspection, we did notice we only received two of the meats we needed for the meals (we got the pork and shrimp, but no chicken). A quick email to their support line resulted in a credit to the account for the missing item. While we’ll have to pop out for some chicken breasts when we are ready to make that entree, it was a simple enough item that it was no big deal. No harm, no fowl (ahem).

Yup, yup, and yup

Drainable AND recyclable!

FirstThoughts:

  • Meal selection: Large variety of plans and options for all types of tastes
  • Ease of ordering: Super simple, quick delivery
  • Customer service: No hassle, immediate response and resolution
  • A good amount of packaging, but everything was recyclable
