Heimdall’s Workshop: V1. M4 FirstLook

Built like a tank, but wearable!!!

Inspiration comes from many different sources. The makers at Heimdall’s Workshop take theirs from Viking and Scandinavian folklore, from military history, and from weaponry. Case in point: their latest watch, the V1. M4.

The backstory: The M4 carbine replaced the M-16 rifle in the late 1990’s, and to date has been adopted by over 60 countries worldwide. Some have described the M4 as “one of the defining firearms of the 21st century.”

Wishing to honor the carbine’s place in combat history, Heimdall’s Workshop took their design notes from the M4 to fashion their latest wrist-wear creation.

Heimdall has formally released the V1. M4 and RainyDayMagazine had the privilege of taking a FirstLook at it for our readers.

Unboxing

The box which showed up on a RainyDay desk was large, but we are used to that from Heimdall. Still, we were surprised and impressed with what was in it when we opened it!

Muffins? Mummy head? M4-styled watch?

The V1. M4 was packaged in more of a vault than a box: a waterproofed case normally used to protect cameras and other such gear. So cool!

Seriously, liquids of all types, don’t even try…

What is in the box:

Just bloody beautiful, that is.

After removing the protective plastic, the depth and details of the face became clearer, and it is, in a word, spectacular. The sapphire glass, skeleton movement, triple hands, and tribute details to the M4 carbine are all clearly and cleanly visible.

As Gollum would say, “My precious…”

Included in the kit is a well-made jeweler’s screwdriver, typically used for sizing a metal bracelet or swapping bands. The thing is, with the FKM strap, there is nothing to “adjust.” Also, we are not sure if the stainless steel screwdriver, as nice as it is, is the proper tool to change the band. To get the strap off, something specifically designed for the task seems to be needed. We will take a look at one in a future DIY.

Yes, you can poke someone’s eye out with this. No, don’t do it.

FirstLook

  • Case Material – Stainless Steel/Black PVD/ Radiation & Vertical Brush
  • Dial – 4 Layers of Stainless Steel
  • Movement – Automatic Miyota 8N40 Skeleton

Q: Is it inappropriate to call a manly, carbine-influenced watch “pretty”? A: No, it is not.

The double-bladed axe – still a powerful symbol.

  • Bracelet – FKM Strap
  • Water Resistance – 100 Meters

The handsome and extremely durable FKM rubber band.

Clear, easy-to-read lume markings. For when you need to know what time it is – in the dark.

FirstWear

The FKM strap is comfortable on the wrist and the PERFECT strap for the V1. M4. The watch, because of its heft, needs a substantial yet flexible way to secure it. FKM material is the right choice.

Heimdall offers both a steel and a calf leather version, but we recommend the FKM option.

The perfect band for this watch.

The V1. M4 is not a poser watch. You won’t find extraneous functions or features on the M4, and it certainly doesn’t connect to an app! However, it is self-winding, will never need a battery, runs for 45 hours when not worn, and will survive a 100-meter dunk. The lume, after charging for less than minute, will last up to 8 hours.

In other words, the M4 is designed to “survive in the wild” (it will, no guarantees about the wearer).

One of the coolest—and heaviest—ways to tell time.

FirstThoughts

The V1. M4 is a tank of a watch. It is over-built, supersized, and—unless your arms are similar in circumference to Dwayne Johnson’s—will look way too big on the wrist, but you will want one and you will wear it if you manage to snag one!!! The V1.M4 is that awesome.

An important piece of information: all of Heimdall’s Workshop watches are limited runs. So don’t wait or you will surely be disappointed!
