Reflection Frame: InTheWild

It has been nine months since we first set up the Reflection Frame. We were interested in the Reflection Frame because it uses e-paper instead of an LCD screen.

Using e-paper in a photo frame is more “natural” as the image looks more like a traditional printed photograph than a bright computer screen.

Digital frames can cycle through slideshows, which is pretty cool, but that can be distracting, because the cycling can catch the eye whilst the owner of said eye is in the middle of something else. E-paper photo frames are intentionally designed for “calmer living”—usually updating only when the user wants.

Because e-paper only consumes energy when the image changes (bistable technology), a frame can hold a single image indefinitely without using any power. This means that the Reflection Frame is completely cord-free, running on rechargeable batteries. This lets the frame be hung anywhere without an ugly power cord dangling down the wall.

The ability to freely place the Reflection Frame makes it worth considering on this feature alone. By removing the glowing backlights of typical digital frames, e-paper also blends better into a home’s decor.

Angle

Traditional LCD screens glow in the dark, which can be highly distracting in a living room or bedroom, but does offer a larger viewing angle. E-paper reflects the ambient light already in the room, meaning it is most viewable in bright light.

We have found that the best viewing angle is head-on, with the light source directly behind the viewer. Because of that, the Reflection Frame is much better in a bright space than in a dark one.

Since e-paper relies on ambient light, its viewing angle and brightness will vary depending on the time of day. We found that the frame performs best when near a window rather than in a corner.

Content

The Reflection e-paper frames utilize advanced panels like E Ink Spectra 6. Combined with specialized dithering algorithms, they produce a softer, textured, vintage tone. Rather than looking like a giant smartphone on the wall, it looks like a physical, matte photo print.

Like with an actual painting or photo, where the viewer is positioned relative to the frame contributes to the viewing experience a lot more with e-paper compared to LCD.

Because both the resolution and color palette of e-paper are at present less than those of LCD technology, we found certain images look better than others when displayed on the Reflection Frame. Images of flowers look much better than those of faces; certain colors will look more natural, and content with subtle details, high contrast, and saturation will not look as good compared to when displayed on an LCD screen.

What looks best on the Reflection Frame are images with softer or muted tones like watercolors, and images of flowers rather than faces. Thank art rather than photos.

FinalThoughts

We are very excited about the future of e-paper. It is a great technology, but it is still in its infancy and is not ready to replace LCD screens for all uses.

The reasons are:

  • Slow Refresh Rate: The physical ink particles take time to move. This creates a noticeable lag during page turns and makes smooth animations or video playback nearly impossible on most models.
  • Ghosting Effects: Residual traces of previous text or images sometimes remain visible on the screen. The display must perform a full-screen flash (inversion) to clear these artifacts.
  • Muted Color Options: While color e-paper exists, the colors are significantly more muted, less saturated, and washed out compared to vibrant OLED or LCD screens.
  • Requires Ambient Light: Because it does not emit its own light, you cannot read it in the dark without a built-in front-light or an external lamp.
  • Higher Retail Cost: Due to complex manufacturing processes and specialized supply chains, devices featuring e-paper screens are often more expensive than entry-level LCD tablets.

Like any emerging technology, e-paper will eventually become more affordable and more widely utilized. We look forward to the day when e-paper screens are as bright, fast, and colorful as LCD. Until then, we are happy we can enjoy it in products such as the Reflection Frame 🙂

Fortunately, progress is being made. We recently got a 10″ Reflection Frame that is made using the latest e-paper technology. The 10-inch Reflection Frame (nicknamed the “Ringlet”) is smaller, sharper, and more affordable than the original 13.3-inch version (the “Skipper”).

We will have a FirstLook at the 10″ Ringlet later in the Fall of 2026!!!
