Culiau Customizer Pro: FirstLook

Cordless engraving pen for amazing details and control.

Rotary tools have been dominated by Dremel forever. We cannot think of another manufacturer that comes close to the selection of tools, variety of bits, and brand recognition enjoyed by Dremel in the rotary tool category.

But when we heard about a new engraving pen called the Customizer, we wanted to see if it could give Dremel a run for its money.

Fountain pens have nibs, engraving pens have bits.

Culiau

The Culiau Customizer is the most pen-like engraver we have ever seen or used. It has the approximate diameter as the typical whiteboard dry-erase marker, fits comfortably in the hand, is nicely balanced, and completely self-contained.

We could write “Senedd Cymru” on a stone with this thing if we wanted to (and knew how to spell it).

Specs:

  • Lithium battery powered: 3.7V, 500 mah
  • Weight: 220g
  • Torque: 30g/cm
  • RPMs: 8000, 15000, 21000

Very pretty, very useful.

To change the bit, the supplied hex key loosens the screw on the side of the collar. The box stores everything, but Culiau also included a cap for when you want to just take the pen with you.

Not meant for writing on paper, even if you’ve got it in your pocket.

FirstProject

We picked up some fantastic rocks at a local beach a while back and because they were relatively flat, and thought they would be perfect for our FirstProject with the Customizer.

Our idea was to engrave a star constellation or two onto (into?) the rocks to see how we and the Customizer did. It would be an easy first test of the pen, and give us a feel for what it was like to use it.

A plethora – a plethora of engraving possibilities!

As expected, the Customizer made short work of engraving the seven dots onto the rock. The pen felt very comfortable in use, didn’t slip or kick, and with engraved with minimal vibration.

We were able to control and maneuver the Customizer very precisely. It really was very much like marking with a pen!

Yep, just like the heavens – only in rock form.

Making seven dots is not (that) hard, and obviously we have plans for more ambitious engraving projects with other materials. However, like any new tool, we wanted to get familiar with the Customizer and understand its “personality” before really going wild with it.

Based on this first quick test, we are excited and eager. Next we’ll try all the bits, to see more of what the pen can do, and to start pushing its limits!

A nifty–and accurate–depiction, but not accurate for celestial navigation!!!
