DeskView Motis : FirstLook
A mobile standing desk anywhere there is glass...what???
During the pandemic, many of us set up a small “satellite” office at home. Some of those offices were make-shift/make-do setups (Note to self aka everybody: they all know when you’re in the laundry room). Other setups were more proper and permanent. In spite of the unexpectedness of our home-is-office situation, we have no doubt that every single person in the same situation gave quite a bit of thought to their office comfort.
We all know that proper ergonomics is important, regardless of working at the home-office or at the office-office, but what about the back-on-the-roaders? How do they get some ergonomically-appropriate space? This was the question that the DeskView people pondered, and answered…and in a way that we think will also be intriguing for people who have no interest in becoming road warriors, again or ever!
Read on to see why…
DeskView Motis
The Motis came to our attention after readers who read about the QOR360 Active Chair asked us about standing desks. We LOVE our active chair, but when they pointed us to the Motis, we knew we had to take a look for ourselves. Why? Because the thing is GENIUS!!!
The Motis is a portable standing desk that can be set up on tempered glass or other flat, smooth, non-porous surfaces (like tile and metal).
We know, we know…we were skeptical too when we were first told about it, but stay with us, it will be worth it.
Unboxing
What’s in the box:
The Motis comes completely assembled and ready for use. It is:
- made of metal,
- weighs in at 4.5 lbs,
- folds to a compact 2.25″x7.5″x14″ slab (for transport), and
- can be set up in—and we are not making this up—just a few seconds.
The concept is extremely clever, but it is the execution of the idea which we really admire.
The creator of the Motis, Mike Bolos and his team, didn’t opt for plastic components and lesser quality materials for the Motis. Instead, after years of refinement, Mike, et al., delivered a solid piece of SOHO gear which would stand out in any boardroom or modern office.
Details
- Solid metal hinges
- Integrated bubble level
- Industrial grade suction disc and locking lever
The level bubble is conveniently place to assist with the proper leveling of the platform and is out of the way once the Motis surface is completely deployed.
The suction cup/locking hinge combo is massive, and when use on the proper material—glass, non-porous tiles, smooth metal—creates a vacuum hold that can stay up for months. For months, people.
When deployed, the platform of the Motis is 14″x14″, plenty for most laptops. The hold of the suction cup has been tested with loads up to 70 pounds, but a static load of no more than 40 pounds is recommended. Obviously, no laptop today weighs that much. Still, it’s good to know that the Motis can easily handle it.
Hidden inside the frame of the platform is a slide-out extension for a little extra space when needed.
It is these and other touches which show how much thought has been given to creating this product!
FirstThoughts
We know what you’re thinking: “Yes, it’s cool. Yes, it’s portable. But we don’t travel. How useful is this standing desk for me if I don’t have to stand up to work?” Let us counter that cogitation…
- Ever be standing at a whiteboard and wish you had your laptop with you?
- Ever do a video conference and wish that other callers weren’t looking up your nose? (Not that they want to..)
- Ever do a video call and wish that you could bestride your office like a colossus whilst
pontificatingmaking an extremely important point? (Don’t lie, you totally do sometimes wish this.)
At its heart, the Motis desk is a platform, that you can use on any smooth, glass-like surface (with some caveats, of course). We are just starting to think about some of the “non-desk” application for the Motis.
The conventional FirstUse is coming and will contain our thoughts on using the Motis as intended. However, the really fun write-up will be the InTheWild one, where we will hopefully show some of the “less conventional” places and applications.
