TORRAS Neck Fan: FirstUse

A lot better than a hand fan and a misting bottle!!!

Earlier this Summer we took a FirstLook at a device called a “neck fan” or “wearable air conditioner.” The basic idea is that the fans wrap around a person’s neck and direct cool air to the skin.

TORRAS took it a step further and incorporated a cooling plate that used thermoelectric coolers (TEC), which use the Peltier effect (something the editor of this article had to look up and STILL doesn’t know what it is), to actively cool the skin, further enhancing the cooling effect.

Spec:

  • Physical buttons
  • 3 thermoelectric cooling (TEC) modules, 14,975 mm² cooling area, patented graphene thermal conductivity, and cooling particles efficiency
  • 360° air flow – 6 upper & 2 lower air vents, 4 motors
  • 3 Modes – Fan/Cooling/Heat Therapy – which are adjustable via the app
  • USB-C – Usable while charging, 6000mAh rechargeable battery

  • Battery duration:
    • Wind Mode(F1/F2/F3): 15.5h / 12.1h / 7.1h
    • Cooling Mode(C1/C2/C3): 2.6h / 2.4h / 2.0h
    • Heating Mode(H1/H2/H3): 4.5h / 4.2h / 3.3h

The Cyber came with a few different charging cables, but not the AC charging brick. We applaud TORRAS for NOT including a wall charger in the package, as we don’t need yet another one cluttering up our drawer of many, many, AC wall chargers.

FirstUse

Charging the Cyber for the first time took less than an hour and lasted for about two hours. The fan noise can be a little distracting at max speed, but not so loud that it was annoying.

The “arms” of the Cyber are flexible and designed to be pulled apart slightly so it can be placed around the neck. All of the edges are rounded, so any contact with the neck and collar-bone area is very comfortable.

The Peltier cooling plates are located at the back of the unit. For the best cooling efficiency, we found that it needs to make direct contact with the skin. Users with long hair will need to make sure the device is placed on the skin and not placed on top of the hair for best results.

In addition to the cooling panel in the rear, there are channels in the front that direct cooled air to the face and neck. The rate of flow can be adjusted using the controls on the arm.

FirstThought

Neck fans without the TEC cooling capability will just circulate the air. The TORRAS Cyber actually cools the air down, then blows it out of the device. This approach is a lot more effective. TORRAS claims it can lower the skin temperature on the neck by up to 12º F. We didn’t measure the effect, but we can say the cooling was detectable and effective.

We used the Cyber inside without AC on an 80º day and felt immediate relief.

It should be noted that while circulating cooler air around the head and neck area does provide cooling relief, neck fans are not as effective as air conditioning, as they do not remove humidity. We’ve found these fans to be most useful on warm, drier days, rather than warm, humid days.

The TORRAS Cyber is an innovative solution to keeping cool on hot days. We will post an InTheWild update once we have had more experience with it. Stay tuned!!!
