Worx PowerShare Cordless Pruning Saw

Prune, Trim & Delimb...cordlessly :-)

We like Worx products because they are thoughtfully designed, well-constructed, and reasonably priced for home gardeners.

The RainyDayGarden has a pretty decent collection of Worx gardening tools (blower, edger, etc). So when we went looking for a cordless power-pruner to help us tackle our rather vigorous trumpet and wisteria vines, we knew Worx would be our first stop 🙂

Worx

Sure enough, Wrox has a few for us to choose from. The pruner that best fits our needs is the 20V Power Share 5″ Cordless Pruning Saw. It’s small, light enough for one-handed operation, and has an efficient brushless electric motor.

Conventional brushed electric motors are still pretty common, but brushless motors are far superior in every way. The biggest advantages of brushless motors are:

  1. a higher power-to-weight ratio;
  2. faster speeds;
  3. better efficiency; and
  4. less need for maintenance.

Brushless electric motors run 50% longer, are 25% more powerful, and have a 10X longer lifespan. They’re also smaller than brushed motors, allowing tools to be more compact and lightweight while still offering good power.

Recently upgraded for efficiency, Worx’s Brushless Motor 2.0 offers 40% more power and a 10% longer run time than the first-gen version. Plus, it’s smaller, lighter, and quieter…bonus, bonus, bonus!

  • Compact saw for pruning, trimming, delimbing, and bucking,
  • Offset bar and chain for better line-of-sight,
  • Onboard tool for fast & easy chain tensioning,
  • Retractable bar and chain guard for easier under-cutting,
  • Guarded handle design, and
  • Uses the same battery for all tools in the Worx Power Share™ line.

FirstLook

The Worx pruner is surprisingly light and very well-balanced for one-handed operation. There is a sleeve to protect the chain when not in use. The battery pack attaches to the end of the hand grip and acts as a nice counterbalance to the forward weight.

The battery powering the pruner is an updated version of the ones that power our other Worx tools. It will fit on our other tools, but is now part of Worx’s PowerShare line.

What is the idea behind the PowerShare battery? For other tools (lawn mowers, blowers, etc) that might require more power, instead of a bigger battery, additional batteries can be added. This “sharing” is a more versatile approach, and we like it a lot.

BTW, the new design now has LEDs to show the power level…no more guessing on when the battery will run out 🙂

FirstUse

A job that used to take us two hours was done in 10 minutes! The Worx pruner tore through the tough vines effortlessly, never jamming, and was easy to control. It is light enough for one-handed operation and made short work of our very long vine-pruning task.

The offset bar & chain enabled us to see exactly what and where we were cutting and pruning. The compact design allowed us to hold this cordless pruning saw up high and to get into tight spaces without conking ourselves on the head with it.

Our only suggestion for improvement would be to make the tool so that it does not require two hands to start it. The trigger-release lock and the trigger are far enough apart that we had to use one hand to push the trigger-release button and the other to squeeze the trigger. Others may have bigger hands and may not have an issue doing it one-handed, but we did.

Cleanup

Just because the pruner didn’t bind a single time as it ripped its way through the tough Wisteria and Trumpet vines, that does not mean that the tool should be put away without cleaning it. After use, we can see pieces of debris jammed under the cover. We tried pulling on some of the pieces poking out, but couldn’t get all of them out.

The stuff packed under the cover should probably be cleared out before putting the tool away. Fortunately, the cover is designed with an integrated Lock/Unlock ring for quick, tool-less removal.

Safety Tip: While not absolutely necessary, we ALWAYS remove all battery packs, unplug any power source, and make sure whatever it is that we are working on cannot power up accidentally, BEFORE we do any maintenance work on any tool.

You do what you want, but we like all our fingers!!!

With the cover off, it was obvious that this step needs to be done after every use. We found that the easiest way to do that is to remove the chain and, with the help of a stiff brush, get in there and clean out all the embedded bits…which was a surprisingly large amount.

With all the crap removed, reassembling the pruner was quick and easy…note that the battery pack is still off 🙂

FirstThoughts

Our FirstUse of the Worx pruner showed this Worx product to be a great addition to our RainyDayGarden collection of tools! It worked exactly as we expected, was fast and efficient, and the clean-up was quick and easy.

Next, we’ll use this pruner on branches and limbs to see how well it can handle them. Look for that later in the Fall and early Spring 2026.
