Heimdall’s Workshop: Vegvisir Adventure FirstUse

More than just a pretty face!

A box from Heimdall’s Workshop showed up at the RainyDayMagazine office back in January. A watch box. With a watch in it. A Heimdall Vegvisir watch.

One look and we knew that that watch had the potential to reset the bar for what a sub-$500 automatic wristwatch could offer in term of features, quality, and style.

It is now May and we want to describe our experience with the Vegvisir to readers, if nothing else but to slow down the constant stream of emails from readers asking what we thought of the watch!

In Action

We quickly realized, after wearing the Vegvisir, that while we have other watches which cost more/have more features, the Vegvisir is the one we chose to wear more often than not.

We wore it everywhere, while:

Why the Vegvisir? There is, of course, the easy to read face, the feel of the stainless steel bracelet, and the general heftiness of the whole package. However, after mulling it over for a while, we realized that it was the Vegvisir (Wayfinder) symbol on the watch.

We really liked the juxtaposition of the ancient Icelandic magical stave and the modern time marker. The runic symbols on the bezel didn’t hurt either 🙂

Yup, a úlnliðsúr for every situation

Wear & Tear

Some owners “baby” their watches, but because we want to see how things hold up in the wild, we treat watches no differently than we treat any of the gear we test. We wear them, live our lives with them, and note how they fare. Some of them last, some don’t. The Vegvisir Adventure absolutely did.

Rúns even a Norrænn Guð would covet.

The double-domed sapphire glass of the Vegvisir came through our FirstUse without a scratch, and we did plenty of things that would have (and had) marked up more expensive units.

The bezel passed with flying colors as well. We saw no scratches or marks on the ring. Any oil or fingerprints came away easily with soap and water. Because of the close tolerance, there weren’t any gaps or crevices to trap dirt.

Why yes, that IS a Viking double-bladed axe (symbol) on the crown.

After wearing it for three months, the Vegvisir Adventure looks as good now as the day we took it out of the box.

You know who wants one of these, and is mad that we got ours first? Loki.

The bracelet of the watch is as high quality as any we have in our collection. The double lock clasp with its push-button release and a V-security clasp worked perfectly. There was never an unexpected release or difficulty with its action.

The only part of the watch to suffer any marking is the main body of the double lock. This piece naturally came into contact with and rubbed against any surface we put our left wrist on. So it was expected that the metal would get nicked/scratched. That is not the fault of the watch designer, nor is there anything which can guard against it.

As bright and shiny as Thor’s hair.

As with the glass, we can also confirm the back of the Vegvisir emerged pristine after everything the watch went through in its FirstUse period. The body oil, sweat, and creams had no effect on the stainless steel. Also, you really cannot beat the double-axe engraving. We sometimes take the watch off just to have a look 🙂

You will need that double-bladed axe to keep people from trying to take this watch from your wrist.

Thoughts

Our FirstUse thoughts of the Vegvisir after three months are:

  • Looks great, wears well, solid comfortable feel
  • Did get some marks on the clasps, but the glass stayed pristine
  • A rugged substantial automatic built for everyday
  • Incredible value for the money

What’s next for Heimdall?

RainyDayMagazine readers know that we don’t do promotional pieces, product announcements, or mention things we don’t actually have in-house. However, we all want exceptional companies with worthy gear to succeed. So occasionally, we will pass on something interesting which we would love to see come into being!

Heimdall’s Workshop is working on an inspired watch project called the M4. We encourage readers to to check it out and support it if it looks interesting.
