Fellowes Shredder : FirstLook/FirstUse
This thing is a BEAST!!!
Identity theft is seriously on the rise. To combat it, whenever possible and practical, we opt for receiving our statements and important documents electronically. Why? Because paper statements sent via mail are not secure. However, some stuff still comes via snail mail, which eventually requires secure disposal.
Also, archived forms, tax returns, and sheets of paper filed over the years will have to be culled after they are no longer needed. Those documents, while no longer needed, should not be tossed into the bin without first being rendered unreadable. The simplest way to do that is to shred them.
FirstLook
Our RainyDayIntern looked at a LOT of shredders before deciding on the Fellowes 99Ci.
The 99Ci is a cross-cut shredder designed for SOHO use. It is a Level P-4 Shredder. This security level is needed for destroying sensitive and confidential information, such as financial data, personal records, and employment contracts, making data reconstruction nearly impossible with ordinary tools.
This shredder also has a 9-gallon pull-out waste container with an LED Bin-full Indicator for easy waste collection and disposal.
Features:
- Sheet Capacity: Up to 18
- Can Shred: Paper, Paper Clips, Staples, Credit Cards, CDs & DVDs, Junk Mail
- Run Time: Up to 30 minutes
- Speed: 10 ft/min
- Throat Width: 9 inches
- Bin Capacity: 9 gallons…or apparently one small feline intern
- Cut Type: Cross Cut
- Cut Size: 5/32 x 1 1/2 inch
- On/Off power button, Instant-On button
- Dimensions (HxWxD): 25.19 x 11.44 x 17.31 inch
- Four casters
- Weight: 36.37 lb
FirstUse
The 99Ci shredder has a continuous duty motor that uses 70% less power than conventional paper shredders, has Anti-Jamming technology, and a SilentShred System for quiet operation.
Our RainyDayIntern put the 18-page claim to the test…over and over, for 20 minutes.
The shredder never jammed once, didn’t overheat, and shredded everything like a boss! It was, as claimed, quiet. No loud grinding roar…perfect for the SOHO environment.
The 9-gallon bin is good for a few hundred letter-sized sheets of paper before needing to be emptied. A liner made it easier to empty out, but not required. One thing we did notice is that if we waited for the “bin-full” indicator to come on, pulling the bin out can make a little bit of a mess.
FirstThoughts
The Fellowes Shredder 99Ci is an excellent choice for the RainyDayMagazine office. With our small paper load, we probably will have to clean it out only once every few weeks. The unit is small enough to fit under a standard office desk and wheeled out when needed.
We expect this unit to work for a good long time, but we’ll have an InTheWild update on this in a year just to let readers know how it fared. Stay secure and be careful out there…you never know who might be going through your trash!
