The standard Porsche Rear Speaker kit can be had on EBay for about $175.  Most of the parts (speakers, wires, connectors) will be needed from the kit for this PVC enclosure project.   We sold the rest (bracket, grill, misc parts) on EBay for about $50.

The hardest part of the project was figuring out how to house the speaker units.  We found the 3" to 2" PVC pipe adapter to be the perfect fit for the speakers.  All of the interconnects are 2" pipes, cut to fit.  We found a table saw to be critical for getting the cuts right.

The curve piece is a 2" 180 elbow joint.  We did not glue any of the pieces as the fit was quite tight.  This also left the option of upgrading the speakers at a later date.

It took a little while to figure out how to hook up the wires, but after a little thought, it was pretty easy to make it so just one pair ran out from the rear of each set.

We used different connectors for the + and - wires... just to make hooking things up fool-proof!  With everything mounted, it was time to make the grill.

Boxster PVC Rear Spearkers Construction:

Prototyping and Wiring

By Wan Chi Lau

The Porsche Boxster rear speaker system requires the hard storage unit.  If the Boxster did not come with the unit, it will cost about $300 on EBay if/when they become available.

We decided it would be easier to just make some enclosures for the rear speaker kit.

The project was pretty involved, mostly because there were no instructions to follow... so we had to design everything from scratch.  We looked around and settled on using PVC pipes for the housing unit.

The good thing about PVC pipes are they are cheap and they are easy to cut.  We went through about $40 worth of pipes before we got the design just right :-)

Apparently, we were NOT the first to consider using PVC for speaker housing.  Some folks have turned PVC pipes into Acoustical Art!

This project was divided into 3 phases:

- Construction (16 hrs)

- Painting (2 hrs)

- Installation (2 hrs)

Project Summary: housing

1. Difficulty - High

2. Time - 14 hours (incl. design)

3. Tools - Table saw

4. Cost - $40 parts w/o speakers
