The grill for the speaker had to be specially made.  We ordered the MetalMesh for about $7.  The mesh was easily cut using scissors.  We used the removable ball from our PC's trackball to form the curve surface of the grill.  The degree of curvature was up to us.  The cover for the grill was a 3" piece of PVC straight coupler.  Notice the molded piece on the inside of the coupler made a perfect "stop" for the grill.

The lip of the coupler was a bit long so we cut off about an inch which made it more flush with the grill.

Once all of the grill covers had been test-fitted, the speakers were ready for painting... or not, depending on the color of your Boxster :-)

Boxster PVC Rear Spearkers Construction :

Making the Grill

By Wan Chi Lau

The Porsche Boxster rear speaker system requires the hard storage unit.  If the Boxster did not come with the unit, it will cost about $300 on EBay if/when they become available.

We decided it would be easier to just make some enclosures for the rear speaker kit.

The project was pretty involved, mostly because there were no instructions to follow... so we had to design everything from scratch.  We looked around and settled on using PVC pipes for the housing unit.

The good thing about PVC pipes are they are cheap and they are easy to cut.  We went through about $40 worth of pipes before we got the design just right :-)

Apparently, we were NOT the first to consider using PVC for speaker housing.  Some folks have turned PVC pipes into Acoustical Art!

This project was divided into 3 phases:

- Construction (16 hrs)

- Painting (2 hrs)

- Installation (2 hrs)

Project Summary: Making the Grill

1. Difficulty - Easy

2. Time - 2 hours

3. Tools - scissors

4. Cost - $7
