The goal was to see if we could assemble <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Kantanas_Assembled_2820.jpeg\">a high-quality katana<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/2025\/02\/23\/diy-200-katanatest-fit\/\">sourcing all the parts<\/a> from China.<\/p>\n<p>The project took a few twists and turns, some of them because of us, some because of things waaay above our pay grade. It also has silicon, which contributes to its hardness and edge retention.<\/p>\n<p>1095 steel is also a high-carbon steel. Perhaps it is not important if they are different; our interest in the testing is twofold: whether we can discern any difference, and if we can, do they matter?<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CuttingMats_2825.jpeg\">Mats<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>We had rolled up a whole bunch of <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/2024\/09\/08\/tameshigiri-series-rolling-the-mats\/\">mats for cutting<\/a> a while back, but <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CuttingMats_2825.jpeg\">tucked a few away<\/a> so we would have them on hand for testing whenever we needed. The same is true of <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CuttingMats_Soaking_2875.jpeg\">prepping<\/a> the mats. The grassy aroma of <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CuttingMats_Soaking_2904.jpeg\">the tatami rolls<\/a> can be pungent, and best when <em>not<\/em> trapped indoors, especially when it is 95\u00ba out. And finally, how would the katana perform?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The answers to the first three questions are &#8220;Yes!&#8221; and were discussed in detail <a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/wp\/?s=DIY%3A+%24200\">in previous posts.<\/a> N<span style=\"font-size: revert;\">ow that both katanas have been assembled, the last question of whether we can cut with them is now answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What is next? We have a few ideas&#8230;refinements such as polishing and sharpening are being considered, trying different cutting sequences is definitely on the list, and there is even talk of modifying one of the blades by putting in a <a href=\"https:\/\/markussesko.com\/2015\/02\/25\/kantei-1-sugata-3\/\">bo-hi<\/a>. The goal was to see if we could assemble a high-quality katana by sourcing all the parts from China.
