One of the cases we looked at was the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2011\/Home\/July\/Week3\/RDMHomeJul2011.htm#iPad2_OtterboxInstall\">Otterbox Defender<\/a>. When the new iPad came out, a few readers asked if the same Defender case would fit the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00746MXF8\/?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=rainydaymagaz-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\">latest Apple tablet<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=rainydaymagaz-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>. As the dimensions were the same, we thought it should work. When we pinged Otterbox to confirm, we were told that there were some changes and the case for the iPad2 would NOT fit the new iPad. However, Otterbox did say that they have updated the case and that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.otterbox.com\/New-iPad-and-iPad-2-Defender-Series-Case\/APL2-IPADD,default,pd.html?dwvar_APL2-IPADD_color=M3&amp;start=1&amp;cgid=new-ipad-cases\">their latest Defender<\/a>\u00a0will fit both the iPad2 and the newest iPad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/PkgBig.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/Pkg.jpg?resize=620%2C412\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With each redesign of the Defender case, Otterbox has kept what worked and reworked what did not. The unit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2010\/Home\/July\/Week5\/RDMHomeJul2810.htm#OtterBoxDefender_Installation\">for the original iPad<\/a>\u00a0was ground-breaking with its multi-layer approach. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2010\/RainyDaySOHO\/iPadCovers\/OtterBox\/Defender\/Installation\/TooThickBig.jpg\">three-quarter case<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2010\/RainyDaySOHO\/iPadCovers\/OtterBox\/Defender\/Installation\/InsertingTopBig.jpg\">split back<\/a>\u00a0were unnecessarily complicated. Also, the lack of a built-in stand was a glaring omission. Otterbox addressed all of those issues when they\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2011\/RainyDaySOHO\/iPad2\/Accessories\/HeavyProtection\/InstallOtterbox\/AllBig.jpg\">reworked the case<\/a>\u00a0for the iPad2.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/CaseCoverBack.jpg?resize=620%2C206\" alt=\"\" usemap=\"#Map7\" width=\"620\" height=\"206\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/SkinShellCover.jpg?resize=622%2C138\" alt=\"\" usemap=\"#Map8\" width=\"622\" height=\"138\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the new iPad came out, Otterbox took the opportunity to further refine their Defender case. The front frame now has a built-in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/ShellBig.jpg\">clear screen<\/a>. The dock connector cover is now just a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/PortSpeakerBig.jpg\">small<\/a>\u00a0flap (instead of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2011\/RainyDaySOHO\/iPad2\/Accessories\/HeavyProtection\/OtterboxPortBig.jpg\">large<\/a>\u00a0one). The hard screen cover now has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/CoverBig.jpg\">small magnets<\/a>\u00a0so that the iPad will automatically go into Sleep Mode when covered.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/BtnAndPorts.jpg?resize=620%2C412\" alt=\"\" usemap=\"#Map11\" width=\"620\" height=\"412\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As with the case for the iPad2, this new case gives the user full access to all of the ports and buttons. Openings such as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/BtnPowerBig.jpg\">dock<\/a>\u00a0and headphone jacks have covers. The camera port has a clear window. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/PortSpeakerBig.jpg\">speaker<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rainydaymagazine.com\/RDM2012\/RainyDaySOHO\/Otterbox\/Defender\/FirstLook\/PortCameraBig.jpg\">mic<\/a>\u00a0ports (by necessity) are the only ones which are open to the outside. Both are well recessed, but can be affected by dust and moisture. As with all Defender cases, the case will protect the iPad from knocks and tumbles.
