Every once in a while we come across something completely frivolous, marvelously bling-y, and, of course, utterly desirable. We\u00a0know that whatever it is is silly, but we want it anyway. Anyway<\/em>. And we know you’ve been there, too.<\/p>\n

The above was how it was when we first saw the Porsche Aluminum-look gas cap. The Porsche Aluminum-look gas cap!<\/em> Good gracious, Mary, get us the smelling salts, will you?<\/p>\n

Who’da thunk this thing\u2014this thing\u2014<\/em>would send us into a dither?!?!<\/p><\/div>\n

The Details<\/h3>\n

The first thing to note about this Porsche gas cap<\/a> is that, while it LOOKS like it is made out of a hunk of aluminum<\/a>, it is in actuality NOT. It has the matted silvery color<\/a> of the metal, but we are pretty sure it is entirely made of a plastic material. And there is nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n

The cover is attached with six metal hex machine screws<\/a>, has clear and uniform embossing, and has a nice and even smooth surface. It also appears to be clear-coated.<\/p>\n

The Installation<\/h3>\n

Three retaining loops came with the cap. Inside the box<\/a> was an instruction sheet, printed in numerous languages, all of which basically said that the cap must<\/em> be installed by the dealer. Yeah…no.<\/p>\n

“Screw your courage to your sticking place” and just put the retaining loop on yourself.<\/p><\/div>\n

The cap internals consist of a vented plug with a rubber O-ring<\/a>. The plug has two tabs on the side<\/a>. Older Boxster have caps that screw in (not press in), so make sure you get the type which fits your car, as the two types are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n

The Strap<\/h3>\n

The only actual “thing” we had to do in this project was to install the retaining tether<\/a>. There were no actual instructions, but we were able to figure it out anyway: place over the plug; push in place. Done<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> The loop should be able to rotate freely after installation.<\/p>\n

The Boxster<\/h3>\n

Installing the new gas cap was no harder than replacing the gas cap<\/a> after a trip to the pump. We have not decided whether we want the new cap tethered to the car, but since we’ve already installed the retaining cable, once we make up our minds about it we are ready.<\/p>\n

We might just have to get a newer, shinier Boxster to match the new gas cap.<\/p><\/div>\n
