Delkin PopUp Shade – InTheWild

We got the Delkin Shade for our Nikon D40 back in 2008. The Pop-Up shade is a helpful accessory for anyone who likes to check their work via the camera’s LCD, especially when out in bright sunlight.

However, we stopped using it after a while because we found it interfered with our style of shooting. With the shade popped-up on the D40, it was difficult to frame the photo because we could not get close to the eyepiece. We had to constantly open/close the shade and it was more of a bother than it was worth. However, the issue went away when we got our Nikon D90. With “live-view” capability through the LCD, we now could frame our shots using the LCD instead of the viewfinder. In fact, if you like using the LCD to frame your shots, then the Pop-Up Shade is almost a required addition for the camera.

Our Delkin Pop-UP Shade story doesn’t end there. As many of you know, we have been exploring and experimenting with various macro-photography setups. Because macro shots are so light-dependent, many of our images were taken in the RainyDayGarden in bright sunlight. When using a bellows, focusing had to be done manually. We were constantly checking the to see if our shots were sharp enough and the Delkin Shade was a huge help.

The Delkin Shade has been a critical accessory which enables us to quickly check the work and to make the appropriate adjustments without having to bring the images up on the laptop for verification, a huge savings in both time and effort. Yes, we still have to close the Pop-Up shade in order to focus, but the extra step is now more than worth it 🙂
